I got the opportunity to use my Intra-op hypnosis CD today during some dental surgery.
The staff were so accustomed to people having I.V. Versed and a narcotic that they looked absolutely dumbfounded when I just got out of the chair and put on my coat and walked out after the surgery was done.

As a Nurse Anesthetist, I am absolutely dumbfounded that there is no anesthesia trained person there during dental surgery when a person has I.V. anesthesia on board. You have a dentist and a dental assistant and that's it. What would happen (and sometimes does) when somebody goes to deep. Airways can be compromised, respirations can stop etc.

It seems so easy to use supplemental hypnosis and local anesthesia. And it is safe!!

Now that really sounds exciting! I bet the staff was really in shock. Sure would like to know more about that Intra-op hypnosis CD.

I was an operating room nurse for years and then studied anesthesia and became a Nurse Anesthetist. In anesthesia training I had over 3,000 cases alone and stopped counting. I know about surgery and what goes on and what statements/suggestions are needed for the various surgeries.

So....made the best Intra-operative hypnosis CD. I totally believe that for every surgery, one should listen to a hypnosis CD. First of all, some people are known to hear even under general anesthesia and why hear things that the surgeon or O.R. staff are saying ie: Ooops I dropped a stitch, or quick suction that bleeder, or cancer everywhere they don't have a chance. Second, there are some cases of people being awake during anesthesia but unable to communicate so with my CD it allows them to put themselves into hypnosis.Thirdly, studies have shown that less medication during anesthesia is needed .

Hey Seth,

I know what you mean about people hearing what is being said in the O.R. I had a client about 4 months ago who was sent to me by a doctor I usually work with. This guy kept having problems with his stomach region and his doctors couldn't find anything wrong. Long story short after him being sent to different people he landed on my door step from a referral.

I started to work with him and eventually we discovered he heard something in the O.R. while the people had him open. The doctor and the nurses were joking about something unrelated to the client, but he took it as they were talking about him. I won't go into details, but it involved the comments off being stabbed through the stomach with a sword. The talk between the doctors and the nurse were actually related to some T.V. show

Once I re-educated the client that they were not talking about him and a few other techniques he had never had the problem again. Two of his doctors called me to actually thank me in person as they had received a great thank you notice from my client. They loved it because since one referred him to the doctor who referred to me. The client figured without the referrals to meet me he would have never got over this hump. So that felt really great and now I get a client or two every month from the both of them for smoking and stress management.

So I agree with you that people can hear what is going on. Ron Elsinger talks about this two I believe.

There was a study in the operating room of repeating a certain unusual phrase reponse to a certain remark. It had a control group with just the usual phrase. This was repeated during General Anesthesia. In the recovery room, the control group responded with the usual phrase response and the test group repeated the unusual response they had heard while under general anesthesia!!!!

Hi all,

Home resting from my dental/jaw surgery this morning. It was a little
bit more complicated than originally planned for so some extra work
needed to be done. Had "my "Intra-op hypnosis CD playing and once
again the doctor had to ask me how I was doing, as I was so quite.

The interesting thing is the Xylocaine wore off sooner than usual
towards the end. Took myself to the beach on Hawaii and was
"observing" the stitches going through the back of my gum with the
pulling through of the silk thread. It worked, I became the "Hidden
Observer" as Hilgard called it in his book , "Hypnosis in the Relief
of Pain".

It dawned on me that he looses $400 on me every time we do surgery as
I turn down the offer of office anesthesia. As an anesthetist, I know
that the dental staff will be involved in the dental surgery and there
will be no on involved in my anesthesia "only". I used to work as an
anesthetist, for a few oral surgeons, so I am quite aware of what goes
on behind the scenes in the dental surgery office. It is the only way
to go as far as I am concerned.
