Learn Hypnosis, NLP & Personal Development

Hey Everyone,

Here is a quick lesson to anyone just getting involved in the wonderful world of hypnosis. Many people out their will swear by learning conversational/covert hypnosis and many people will swear by learning the more direct style of people such as Dave Elman. For years, their has been a sort of unspoken battle between the two. Each one claiming their style is better and more effective.

Well, I think it's mentalities like this that hold us as a profession back. Some hypnotists spend their whole life trying to master one style and in this attempt to become a master they forget or completely ignore all the possibilities that the other style has to offer.

So my little lesson here is learn and cross train in more than one style of hypnosis. Each style has it's positives and negeatives and I promise you that if you cross train you will have the best of both worlds. Some people respond better to conversational hypnosis and some people respond better to direct styles of hypnosis. Now if you are stuck knowing only one style and your client responds better to the other one than you may have missed out on some golden chances to help your client.

A teacher of mine once said we have to think of our techniques and training in the form of a toolbox and within that toolbox we have different tools for different situations. So why just be good when you can be great. So spend some time learning the one you enjoy more and than learn the other. You don't have to master each. You just need to get a good understanding. I have been doing this since I have been 18 and I can tell you it's so good to have knowledge in both fields. I promise you that you will find things you enjoy from both styles or other styles as their are more than just direct and indirect.

so now ive been hearing this around but what is conversational hypnosis?

Conversational Hypnosis is basically using hypnosis in the context of a conversational. Typically conversational hypnosis doesn't involve eye closure or direct style of inductions such as rapid or instant. It's done through what would appear to most simple conversation. You would just talk to the person using certain techniques, words, vocal tones and other things to acheive trance within the other person. Conversational Hypnosis is also known as Covert Hypnosis.

How this is done is another post all together and we'll post something on that soon.

Hi Josh,
Is there any way that you can tell what type of induction will work best through pre-talk or any other observation?

Hi Clyde,

Typically, the longer you practice and study hypnosis the better you will get at this skill. It's hard to explain, but it's similar to the concept of what you do it, you'll know. Hypnosis is a skill and like any skill we can spend so much time studying it we get to a point where all the knowledge is stored unconscious and we just act on it. So in other words, you could be working with a client and as you speak with him you'll get an idea of what induction or technique to use. It's like a unconscious knowing so I know it may seem hard to understand, but trust me. Keep studying and practicing and you will notice that you will start being able to know which induction or method to use on a almost unconscious level.

Now with that being said I do make certain notes to myself when talking to a client which help me gauge where I want to take the session. First thing, I make sure I listen to the client and listen to what they are asking me and how they ask me. The questions a person can act can tell you a lot about how they operate. If they seem to be very anayltical or logical I tend to use a rapid or instant induction. Well, technically all I use is instant and rapid.

Now, beside that I also look at the intake they filled out for any history of back problems, neck problems, heart attacks and similar items. For instance, if the client I'm working with has had a few heart attacks in the last few years I will avoid using a shock induction and may use a confusion induction or Elman Induction.

As you can see there is no real clear cut answer. I typically only use 3 different inductions in my actual office because I know they work and they work well. These are The Elman Induction, The 8 word induction and a modified two hand arm drop induction.

Trust yourself with what you think the client will enjoy. Now here is a little tip. If the client comes in and they have some pre-conceived notice of you using a progressive relaxation induction or swinging a watch I tend to use what the client gives me. They have a expectation which is the doorway to trance and I provide them that key. By doing what they have been expected it helps to build rapport and well it just works. Once again as you continuing studying you will discover you will be able to just know what to do, what to use and if they are even in hypnosis without test.

Sorry for the long answer, but it's late and I have a cold. Ask more questions if needed and so it took so long for me to respond. I have been pretty busy.
