The following is a little snippet from our "Pre-talk for Regression Hypnosis Guidebook" DVD training program.

It can be a rather controversial topic since we go against the grain of popular thought in the regression hypnosis world about whether the hypnotists should or should not tell the client he/she will be regressed.

I've only pasted a small snippet so we can get a discussion going. I'll be posting more on this topic later.

Enjoy!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the biggest mistakes we have seen from regression hypnotists and therapists is that they make no mention of regression hypnosis over the phone. When the client comes in expecting a typical traditional direct suggestion session and is hit with age regression, it can leave the client wondering “What the heck is going on? I didn’t sign up for this!” Trying to “sneak” them into regression when they are not prepared for it can kill your rapport, and really hurt your potential for success.

We know that this may fall out of alignment with what certain hypnosis schools are teaching. They teach hypnotists to never tell the client that she will be regressed because she (the client) will get “too much in her head”, leading to fear that she won’t be able to regress, and a less-than-successful session overall. However, we have found the opposite to be true. Setting up (Pre-talk) the client for a regression session, showing them what’s in it for them/me (WIIFM), and gaining compliance, helps the client to “go for it”-- making your job a whole lot easier.

I tend to agree. I feel it is of the utmost importance to inform the client of EVERYTHING that I intend to do. Most are very receptive to the idea of regression once they understand that this is what we do. Gaing that compliance really opens the doors, improves rapport and gives me the room that I need to accomplish what we BOTH are there for.
Nice Post Matt!

Matt - I agree with you - I always tell people I work with we're going to do regression work, and not one person has had difficulty regressing -

Last evening I was a guest speaker at one of our local Universities; talking to a counseling class about hypnosis including regression work - it generated good quesitons and discussion - very enjoyable

Hi Rich and Dennis,

I remember first starting out and being so conscious about not telling them we will be doing regression work, and now adays I wonder what the big fuss was in the first place. Hopefully it will change in some hypnosis schools because I honestly do think it's a bit intrusive if you don't get an agreement for regression work.

I am new to regression work. I took a short class on Past Life Regression Therapy. I was taught you only do regression if a client asks for it.

Hi Cin, that doesn't really make sense to me (only using regression if a client requests it). After all, who is supposed to be the trained professional in the relationship? Maybe you're referring to PLR specifically, and not regression in general?

Hey Cin,

Ya, Steve, I should probably change the name of this group to Age Regression - instead of just regression. This might make this clearer for some.

Cin, if this doesn't answer your inquiry be sure to ask another and I'm sure one of us will answer quickly :).

It may not be an either-or situation, to tell them or not to tell them. I agree that it's not good to "sneak up" on a client who is expecting a "think happy thoughts" type of session. But I do not think it's necessary to discuss specific techniques. In my marketing and especially during pretalk it is made very clear that this will not be a "pep talk" type of experience; in fact this is a great differentiator that is attractive to many people who have tried that kind of stuff with little effect in the past. Anyway people who just want a relaxing mental massage do not fit into my ideal client profile.

But I don't see any need to specifically mention the techniques used. Partly because why does the technique matter to client, as long as client is prepared to expect a potentially intense experience. Most clients just want to get on with it once they get pumped up about the experience.

On a similar note, one area that I think it's crucial NOT to give "hints" about is Forgiveness. I think it's a bad idea letting the client know that they are going to be coached into forgiveness of someone who hurt them. Hinting to them that forgiveness is the solution, ahead of time, without the proper preparation, would surely make forgiveness more difficult. In the process I use, typically forgiveness is done after regression so the client is already prepared for a bit of a rollercoaster ride by then.

Hi Steve,

I always like to say "Many Roads Lead To Rome" and do the best I can to never say never or never say always. But, like alot of others I do fall in the trap at times.

I do agree, however, that in your marketing you may want to be more vague about the techniques or concepts one will be using, for obvious reasons.

For the most part I also agree about 90 percent on your thoughts on forgiveness. But I do think there are moments when you can actually use it for leverage. Especially with a client that's already open to forgiveness.

Also another situation where you can mention forgiveness is when a client comes in saying something like "I've already forgiven everybody.. I've done tons of therapy and I don't need to forgive anyone anymore."

When they come in with this, I generally keep this in the back of my thoughts during my pre-talk ... and in my office when they start sharing their story and I notice some bodily reactions that are not in alignment with total forgiveness, I'll have them close their eyes... have them review the scene (while paying close attention to their body so I can point it out if I need to.) and if they have a pretty decent physical reaction that shows me it's obvious that they are still holding in feelings for a person that still needs forgiveness, I'll then ask them (with their eyes closed) "can you honestly say ______ (offender's name) I forgive you?"

Generally, with a heavy body reaction they will not be able to do it. Many times this stops them in thieir tracks and they say "... I can't do it." - Thus, opening dialogue for forgiveness.

I like the direction of this discussion and I want to be clear about what I do - as I spend time with my client, gathering information about the problem, regression work is not always indicated, and therefore I don't make any mention of this - however, when clinically relevant, I will spend time talking with my client about regression work and reasons I'm looking at using this type of treatment strategy

I have to agree this is a very useful post and very helpful. I typically follow a similar line of thinking to Dennis as I don't always do regression work, but I do use it within my practice. I tend to spend a little time with the client, gather information depending on the problem and using the information they give me within the session. In the beginning I followed the kein way of thinking when doing a regression as I really wouldn't tell the client as I didn't want their conscious mind to be thinking about the regression. I still got great results using this method, but I did have to work a little more sometimes.

I typically would use a dave elman arm drop type of regression or affect bridge technique. Most of the time I would use the Arm Drop as it was the first I ever learned and quite effective overall. Well eventually I met Matt and have since changed my thinking on the subject. Now if I know regression work will be required I do a pre-talk for regression and have found the results to be excellent when using a affect bridge style of regression combined with the pre-talk. It's funny because its as if I'm just talking to the clients and the next thing you know they are regressing. I haven't had a lot of regressions as most people see me for direct suggestion stuff such as smoking and study habit improvements, but I'm a strong believer in the use of Regression Hypnosis.

I have found just as we give a pre-talk to take the fear away from hypnosis the pre-talk for regression helps to set the stage and prepare the client. I must admit I am new to the concept of the pre-talk for regression, but am finding it very, very useful so far and I'm seeing better results with my clients.

I couldn't have said it better myself about using the pre-talk as the induction. Thx Josh :)

Hi Dennis,

I think what you say is key; The proper discussion for the proper concept or technique. We have to learn to be flexible and fluid with our approaches and be willing to change concept or technique should the situation call for it.
