Being professional at all times can really make you into one great entertainer.
Understand and keep in mind that no matter how much hypnosis training you have had in the past and no matter how many certificates you have hanging on your wall at home or in the office for your hypnosis or hypnotherapy skills ...when it comes to stage hypnosis ...you are an ENTERTAINER! Your job is to entertain the audience and your volunteers and perhaps wow them a bit with your vast knowledge of hypnosis but first and foremost you are an entertainer. I don't care if every volunteer on your stage doesn't go into hypnosis after your induction and they are only faking it through your show, you must always say to yourself, "was everyone entertained?" If so, you've earned your pay.
I've had guys call me after their shows all bummed out because only one guy went into hypnosis and a couple of the others just played along with the routines...so what! Your job is not to do anything else but give a good show. Entertain and people will love you. Yes, it is always best to be able to do a show with everyone in a somnambulistic state but sometimes, just sometimes, maybe because your pre-talk was a bit weak, you will find that some people just don't get there but they are willing to play along and that's great too.
One night, I did a show, nobody actually went into hypnosis and one by one I excused all of my volunteers back to the audience ...the club owner thought the show was then a flop. I turned to the audience and said, without you, I have no show so ...who would like to take this seriously and come up here this time and enjoy the very natural state of hypnosis and have the time of their lives so we can have a show tonight? Suddenly I got another ten people up on stage and they all went into hypnosis and the show was a blast. Sometimes you have to start all over ...put the blame on the crowd and then give 'em a show! Just remain cool, calm and professional.
Some other things to consider:
Here is what you should always consider to save yourself in any situation and create successful events:
1) Spare Cables, Cords and Audio Equipment
It may sound simple but do you have a back up of every cable and cord you may need? If you were at a show and the microphone had to go from an XLR output to a RCA input could you pull it off twice?
If you were at a gig and your microphone went out could you instantly run a back up?
If not, head to your local music store and buy back ups. Don’t let your show come crashing down around you because your mike has problems or your cable gets pinched in your case.
2) Appropriate and Extra Introductions
An introduction is very important to a successful show. The introduction can set you up for failure or success. I always carry multiple copies of multiple introductions.
"Ladies and gentleman, a man who is known around the country as one of the top stage hypnotist and an all around nice guy...ect"
No one introduction is going to be perfect for every audience. Once we are on site I can determine which introduction will be most appropriate for the show.
3) Allow Yourself Extra Time
Getting to a gig is the basic first step to doing a good job. It may seem simplistic to you, but once you miss a show because you arrive late you will understand the importance of this lesson.
Always allow plenty of time to get to the show.
In out of town shows, if the airline connection looks difficult it is best to opt for an earlier flight. For a local show it is best to allow plenty of time for automobile accidents, break downs and unexpected detours. They will happen, with amazing frequency.
It is best to allow extra time so you can arrive early, set up and be ready to go without problem. At a minimum be able to run on at the last moment.
4) Eradicate the BS Factor
What is the BS Factor? The BS factor is that which allows you to tweak the excuses or blame others. That means eliminate the BS and deliver. Don’t let the BS interfere.
* You will get sick
* You will lose teeth
* You will lose loved ones
* You will be rushed
* You will arrive late
* You will be pissed off
* You will be depressed
* People will sabotage your show
* and much much more …
But when you hit the stage it is imperative that the person you have dropped the deepest into hypnosis is YOU.
Your job is to entertain, regardless of anything or anyone else.
Follow these four rules and you will be able to pull off a show under any conditions. That is something to make anyone proud.
Enjoy!
